Dundas looks at Jainism in its social and doctrinal context, explaining its history, sects, scriptures and ritual, and describing how the Jains have, over 2500 years, defined themselves as a unique religious community. This revised and expanded edition takes account of new research into Jainism.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, many Americans yearned to understand why Muslim extremists felt such passionate animosity toward the Western world, particularly the United States. Since that historic attack there have been many books and discussions about this very question, but few of them offer such a readable and relevant response as this excellent offering by renowned historian Bernard Lewis (What Went Wrong?). For modern Westerners, Islam is a (more…)

Sikhism is one of the world’s gentlest religions–a sort of eastern version of Anglicanism. It is as though someone had taken the best bits of Hinduism and Islam and merged them into a religion accessible even to the most secular of souls. There is no class or caste system, hence the men are all called Singh (Lion) and the women Kaur (Princess), and it makes no great claim to be the only way; indeed, unlike most religions, it actively promotes the idea tha (more…)

The end result is an overview of paganism and neo-paganism that provides some interesting insights and comparisons between ancient and modern views. Highly recommended. – The CauldronThe Paganism Reader is a laudatory first attempt at summarizing via primary texts the scope of revived Paganism/Neopaganism. It will be useful not only for undergraduate and graduate courses, but undoubtedly for thoughtful Neopagans interested in the history and diversity of their worldviews. (more…)
